For those who aspire to create the opulent home of your dreams, affordably, Colombian native, interior design guru, and author of “Modern Luxury” and “Artfully Modern” Richard Mishaan brings to you some personal inspiration from his own home designs.
For the New York resident, the concept of homes serving as cozy storehouses for art and other collections is key; his bedroom alone contains over 10 paintings on one wall. According to the guru, “these do not have to be particularly fine artworks, but they should display powerful evidence of personality.”
Another key factor for the designer is mixing styles and eras, which has been his motto for over 30 years and can be observed throughout his own home, which includes a combination of works by modern masters of comic, graffiti artists like Kenny Scharf, 16th-century Italian pieces, and furniture from the 1940’s and 30’s. “Not everything has to be from the same era….as long as it all comes together,” tips the designer. “It’s about finding a way to show it and bring it to life.”
The designer’s Hampton home, which is featured in his latest book “Artfully Modern,” features a vivid blue-and-white kitchen, and stripes, plaids, and flame stitches throughout, hinting to yet another attribute of Mishaan’s: his passion for color, which he attributes to his Colombian roots and brief stay in Italy.
He also designed the color scheme of the public spaces and rooms at the AC Marriott in Miami and Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach, boasts of his adoration of the growing trend of hotel style design. “Many residents are asking for their home to be similar to the last hotel they stayed at,” says Mishaan. In fact, his own 16th-century mustard-hued Colombian getaway has been renovated to include a courtyard pool, a rooftop deck, and monotonous style rooms, as the perfect embodiment of hotel comfort.
